A widely used skin classification system is the Fitzpatrick’s Classification of Sun-Reactive Skin Types. This system measures pigmentary responsiveness to ultra-violet light. In many cases, the system indicates ethnic origin.
The Obagi Skin Classification System, unlike the Fitzpatrick’s Classification, classifies skin by color, thickness, oiliness, laxity and fragility.
Importance of Skin Classification
Skin type has an effect on:
- the strength and duration of skin conditioning
- selection of a procedure and its depth
- predictability of procedure results
- suitability of skin for a repeated procedure
- the chance of complications (color changes and scarring)
Five Skin Characteristics
Dr. Obagi’s skin classification system considers five (5) characteristics:
- Color
- Thickness
- Oiliness
- Laxity
- Fragility
